Logo: Gulf Oil Corporation Ltd. The chemical hub of the Hinduja Group was strengthened by the merger of Gulf Oil India Limited with IDL Industries Limited. The merger became effective from 1st January 2002. This merger has enabled the Hinduja Group to consolidate its position in the Indian chemical segment and give it better synergies and a larger network for both domestic and international marketing.

IDL Industries Limited was renamed Gulf Oil Corporation Limited since the activities of the new Company would involve mining and infrastructure services, lubricants and chemicals, including explosives, detonators and speciality chemicals. A new realty division is also being added to the Company.

The Company currently has 4 major operating Divisions:
 

IDL Division
Handling explosives, detonators, explosive bonded metal clads and special devices for Defence and Space applications.

Lubricants Division
Handling, manufacture and marketing lubes, greases and auto accessories.

Mining and Infrastructure Contracts Division
Undertakes large scale mining services in coal and iron ore mines as well as services to the infrastructure sector such as underground metro railways and national highways.

Speciality Chemicals Division
This Division manufactures Active Pharma Ingredients and Intermediates. It also undertakes contract R&D services.


IDL Division


The Division has the largest explosives and detonators manufacturing facilities (8 plants) around India. Its Hyderabad plant is the largest detonator manufacturing facility in the world (192 million per annum). The other plants manufacture cartridge explosives as well as site mix explosives.

The Division employs well-qualified, trained and experienced team of mining engineers, operating in various regions of the Indian subcontinent with offices in Kolkata, Rourkela, Singrauli, Nagpur, Ramagundam, Udaipur and Chandigarh supporting a nationwide distribution network besides liaison offices in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

A well-equipped and well-staffed R&D wing has succeeded in developing new products in line with customer demands and in obtaining a large number of explosives related patents in India and abroad. The R&D Division has been able to commercialise several products for defence and space applications, explosively clad metal plates for chemical industries and ship building and recently electronically programmable detonators used for precision blasting in mines.

The Division is the largest exporter of explosives and detonators to 21 countries, which include Philippines and countries in South East Asia, North Africa, the Gulf, Middle East and Southern Europe.


Lubricants Division


This Division was Started in 1993 to manufacture and market lubricating oil and greases. Within a short span of seven years, the Division has grown to become the second largest lubricant oil manufacturer in the private sector in India. The Gulf brand today is one of the best known brands with an expansive distribution network spread across the length and breadth of the country.

With the wealth of the knowledge and experience of its principal, Gulf Oil International, including a vast database of formulations running into thousands, the Lubricant Division is well placed to cater to all possible applications in the lube sector. The state of the art PLC controlled manufacturing facility ensures the highest product quality and reliability, enabling the Division to export its products to many countries in Asia.

The Division is a regular supplier to almost all major automobile and tractor manufacturers in the country and is approved by almost all major original equipment manufacturers. With the recent marketing initiatives undertaken by this Division, it is poised to take a significant share of the lubricating oil market in the country and neighbouring countries.

Over the last 2 years, this Division has been steadily diversifying into automotive accessories such as various types of automotive filters and mechanic services in large metropolitan cities for maintenance of passenger cars. It is also supplying automatic greasing equipment to large garages which are now handling larger numbers of transport vehicles due to the phenomenal increase in medium and heavy transport vehicles over the last 2 - 3 years in India.

Contracts Division

Being a commercial explosives major, the Company diversified through this Division into large scale mining services. Currently it is executing large projects for coal mining companies supplying to the major thermal power projects in South India over the last 2 years. It has developed a major presence in the booming iron ore mining sector where it is working on very large mines rich in iron ore deposits in Orissa, in eastern India.

The Division has also successfully completed a major project involving creation of underground railway stations and tunnels for the Delhi Metro network as well as quarrying and road building activities in National Highway Authority of India contracts.


Speciality Chemicals Division

The Division has grown from a R&D wing developing chemical molecules for drugs, aroma and other strategic raw materials for the chemical industries, to a full-fledged manufacturing and marketing Division. The large manufacturing Unit on the outskirts of Hyderabad is producing Active Pharma Ingredients and Intermediates for cardiac, anti-depressants, anti-histamines, and analgesic medicines.

The Division also undertakes contract research in its R&D facilities.


Exports

The Company is exporting large quantities of lubricants, explosives and initiating devices for mining applications and Active Pharma Ingredients and Intermediates.

In view of the volume of export orders executed, the Company is a `recognised export house' by the Government of India and has been the recipient of numerous awards for `excellence in exports' over the past decade.
